The amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere today far exceeds the natural range seen over the last 650,000 years. The burning of fossil fuels in cars, planes and power plants -- as well as through other human activities -- releases CO2 into the atmosphere, where it accumulates like a blanket and traps in “Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions have increased since the pre-industrial era, driven largely by economic and population growth, and are now higher than ever. This has led to atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide that are unprecedented in at least the last 800,000 years. In the United States, most of the emissions of human-caused (anthropogenic) greenhouse gases (GHG) come primarily from burning fossil fuels—coal, hydrocarbon gas liquids, natural gas, and petroleum—for energy use.

1 This link between global temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations – especially CO 2 – has been true throughout Earth’s history. 2 Greenhouse gases are measured in ‘carbon dioxide-equivalents’ (CO 2 e). Today, we collectively emit around 50 billion tonnes of CO 2 e each year. This is more than 40% higher than emissions in 1990, which were around 35 billion tonnes.

Translate abstract GHG measurements into concrete terms that are easy to understand. At current greenhouse gas emission rates, temperatures could increase by 2 °C (3.6 °F), which the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) designated as the upper limit to avoid "dangerous" levels, by 2036. Human emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases – are a primary driver of climate change – and present one of the world’s most pressing challenges. 1 This link between global temperatures and greenhouse gas concentrations – especially CO 2 – has been true throughout Earth’s history. 2 Greenhouse gases are measured in ‘carbon dioxide-equivalents’ (CO 2 e).

1 The indicators in this chapter characterize emissions of the major greenhouse gases resulting from human activities, the concentrations of these gases in the atmosphere, and how emissions and concentrations have changed over time. Despite a dip in greenhouse gas emissions from the COVID-19 economic slowdown, the world is still heading for a catastrophic temperature rise above 3°C this century – far beyond the goals of the Paris Agreement. But UNEP's Emissions Gap points to hope in a green pandemic recovery and growing commitments to net-zero emissions.

We look at this in detail here. Greenhouse gas emissions from the EU’s transport increased in 2018 and 2019 and have not followed the EU’s general decreasing emissions trend. National projections compiled by the EEA suggest that transport emissions in 2030 will remain above 1990 levels, even with measures currently planned in Member States.
